Texans tell Carr to hit the road

Call me nostalgic, but I'm pretty disappointed that the Houston Texans decided to dump David Carr in favor of some guy I've never heard of.

I remember the glory days of 2001 when David Carr led Fresno State to an amazing, nearly BCS-worthy season. When he was chosen with the first pick of the 2002 draft, I even purchased a Houston Texans hat at a swap meet to show my support.

But alas, the heights from which he has fallen!

Truth be told, his career numbers stink. But I'm pretty sure he'll end up with at least a backup job somewhere. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and predict that within the next year he'll wind up as a starter and do pretty well at it.

It can be a huge transition from college to the pros. Look at some of the Heisman QBs from recent years. Chris Weinke. Danny Wuerfful. Charlie Ward. Gino Torretta. None of these guys made so much of a dent in the NFL. You could even say a few of them never really got a "shot". At least Carr got his shot. Five years is a long time to stick with a guy when you're losing.

I'm going to stay next to the trunk and predict Carr will do no better than a backup job next year. And if he does get a start all he'll accomplish is to add to his noteworthy "times sacked per game" average of 3.1.

I argued in favor of David Carr on a different blog and will give my main points here:

Carr is a smart and talented QB that was never given a chance to succeed in the NFL. He has had one quality WR (Johnson) and a RB with one good year (Davis), but other than that, his line has stunk, and there's absolutely no way you can succeed as a QB without a good line. I'd take him in a heartbeat on my team (and of course try to reconstruct his contract, for which he is getting paid way too much for his current output).

As a Niner fan, I see him as a less mobile but more talented and having a better arm than Alex Smith, and I'd even go as far as saying I'd rather have Carr than Smith. Just wait till next year when he's on the Raiders (my personal prediction). I'll bet he'll have better stats than Smith.
